Summer Camp: It’s Not

Just For Kids Anymore

by Nicole Hanratty

How many more weeks until summer vacation? My whole household is counting down already. We have passed the midway point of school this year and we are all anxious to sleep in, ignore the alarm clocks and run our own show.

If you’re a parent, it’s not too early to start working on your children’s Summer Camp Checklist. And remember, summer camp is not just for kids anymore.

Research a camp that caters to your child’s interests so that they aren’t whining that they don’t want to go. And trust me, a speech on the cost of camp is not going to get them any more enthused about attending. Be realistic about how many days a week they will actually be excited for camp to keep them pumped up about going. They need a break from structure too, but let’s face it, mom needs a day alone to get the grocery shopping done.

Pay extra for a camp that provides all the services you need for your child. (E.g. swim lessons, on staff nurse, etc.) There is nothing worse than getting to camp and realizing that you are just going to worry every day when you drop your kids off. Do you really want to use up all of your Xanax on Summer Camp Anxieties? Hmmm...probably not.

Find a camp that works for you! Book a summer camp near the beach or in town so you will be more likely to plan enjoyable afternoons for yourself. Remember it’s your summer too...

Think outside the little checklist box. Rent a house with some girlfriends in
San Francisco and sign up all your kids for a weeklong summer day camp at UC Berkley. Day trip to Napa, anyone? Don’t forget to hire a driver.

Going with an overnight camp this year? Get on your own bus and enjoy the week off!
Cabo is calling your name...

Au revoir for now... n
